Top 9 posts for Instagram for this year.
I redid the graphic style for the “5 Things to Know About” series for TheOASG because it was really hard to do the old template and have it still look good. The gradient was super meh and the important information wasn’t really in the middle, so I rejigged it a bit. The half-tone hides the bad resolution of the images in the background, haha.
I’ve been rather neglectful of this blog as of late – with Tumblr’s crackdown on content that gets automatically flagged, I’m really starting to think that self-hosting to create redundancy is the way to go. New website, when?
2018’s been a pretty busy year – I left 2017 with a pretty clear mind, after leaving what I thought was my “dream” job; I got to work on graphic design, designed for a live website that customers used, what more could I expect? But it turns out there were a lot of other things I expected that didn’t really get met. I can honestly say that the year out from that job has been really good for me. I still get really anxious when people convince me that crunching is the only way, and I really struggle to manage that stress, but I can feel myself growing a little stronger every day.
In some ways, it’s been…a bit sad about not being a designer. I am happy as a web developer, and I’m super grateful that this current job is fun, challenging, and people accept that I reply with “I don’t know, I’ll find out for you.” I’m still using my English and design skills a lot for file formats and communicating with other members of the team. Also, mentoring this year has been really eye-opening as to how to manage people. Oh, and I’m on Dribbble after 4 years, I remember brooding so much about being rejected on getting invites. This too will pass.
Twitch streaming really helped with keeping a regular schedule for the lettering work I’ve been doing. Maybe I will open a little online shop for a few stickers and greeting cards. It’ll be a good time to put all this new content marketing knowledge to the test.
I think 2019, I really want to get back on managing my stress/health better and setting better boundaries when it comes to work. I really should log out when I’m logging out; if it needs to be done, then yes, I will take it. Oh, and future self, please negotiate better for the salary part in the future. I really didn’t think that “speaking up strongly about expectations” would be something I’d have to exercise, but I suspect that was something I was sheltered from by my old mentor at the old job, and I really need to step up. Don’t burn yourself up building someone else’s dream.
I honestly thought I was going to be doing more coding when I got home for the holidays, but I’ve literally come home, opened a text editor, and then closed it, and then pulled out my drawing tools instead. I really love development a lot, and I’ve been learning so much “how things work” even though I’m not some super 10x programmer, I don’t mind. I have my own pace. Daily coding might make a return. The weekly lettering project worked out, why not coding?
Oh yeah, travel plans didn’t really work out this year, since I used my vacation to go to conferences and write/study for a functional programming test, so I’ll try a bit harder to plan things with friends, or visit them. I keep saying that I don’t like social events, and yet I still plan and attend the ones for my gaming club. Maybe being a little bit uncomfortable is good for learning.
Best wishes for the new year. I’ll be cheering for you!
